AS HE LEFT THE GUITAR SHOP with a duffel bag over his shoulder, Layne entered a street abuzz with activity. Four black Chevy Suburbans rolling down the road. Morning light bounced off the shiny midnight exteriors of the cars. A few other people had left their respective shops and breakfast diners to wander out to the street and check the commotion.

Layne caught the attention of a man watching the cars roll by. “What’s going on?”

The man regarded him with a raised eyebrow. “Mayor and the governor are doing a presentation at Camberwell Station. Kicking off groundbreaking on new platforms.”

“Camberwell? Where is that?”

Now the man looked at him as he would a confused child. “It’s just up the road past the servo. Next station after Auburn.”

Layne dashed down Burwood toward Auburn Station. Popped in a fresh piece of nicotine gum as he ran. He dipped into the alley that would lead him toward the platforms and then ditched the duffel underneath a dumpster before the station, along with his armpit clothes hanger knife. Took a quick look around to make sure no one had seen him.

He formulated a plan. Confront the governor about why he wasn’t taking the threats against his life seriously. Look him in the eye and make sure he understood the gravity of the situation.

Given the security around him the other day, Layne would have to be a little more sneaky. He expected to encounter security teams for both men merging in one spot. And likely, the giant with the slicked-back hair would be running the show.

Layne followed the tracks toward the next station to the east, Camberwell. Feet crunching through rocks alongside the tracks, his chest burning from the dry air. The morning heat created streams of sweat running down his forehead. The long sleeves of his shirt weren’t helping, so he rolled them up as he ran.

Halfway there, he slowed so he wouldn’t attract attention to himself. He made it to the area in about ten minutes with an even jog.

The train station was elevated, with ramps leading up to the platforms and ticket office. Brick structures with large overhead panels to hide the station from the sun. Both of the ramps Layne could see were stuffed with people. Some held up signs for the governor, some for the mayor. Parents hoisting little kids onto their shoulders to glimpse these politicians.

And at the top of the ramps, Governor Phelps stood next to another man, who must have been the mayor of Melbourne.

Scattered throughout the people standing around to witness the presentation were a few members of the security team. They were wearing plainclothes but were easy enough to spot. Layne did locate the giant with the slicked-back hair near the closest entrance.

Layne began to push his way through the people to reach the ramp. Was formulating what he would say when he got a chance. But he figured going straight up the ramp would be a bad move and would expose him to security in only a few seconds.
